The phrase "head of the study" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used to refer to the person leading or overseeing a research project or academic study.
Example: "Dr. Smith is the head of the study on climate change impacts in urban areas."
Alternatives: "lead researcher" or "principal investigator."
But if results are promising, the study might expand to other hospitals, says Carol Tamminga, chair of the psychiatry department at UT Southwestern and head of the study.
"Once you shift the chemistry of the water, different species can survive in the area," said Robert A. Zampella, the ecology professor who was head of the study team.

The only significant association that remained after adjustment concerned the head circumference of the study sons.
