The chief executive of librarians' association CILIP has written to the head of Birmingham city council to lay out his "concerns about the ongoing quality of library services available" in the city, following the revelation that some libraries in Birmingham were asking the public to donate new books.

Nearby Holbeck Library also faces possible closure as part of the council's reorganisation of library services.
"This is bigger than some college law libraries," said Kit Hartnett, director of library services within the research center.
Until 1981, he was an associate professor of library services at Lehman College.
The erosion of library services has long provoked outcry from authors.
