We do, of course, criticise our own dogs, but this is always done in tender, indulgent tones: "He's so naughty, that's the third pair of shoes he's destroyed this month, ah, bless!" There is more than a hint of pride in these sort of "Isn't he awful?" complaints, as though we are secretly rather charmed by our dogs' flaws and failings.
