"he asked upon" is not a grammatically correct phrase in written English
A more appropriate phrase might be "he inquired about" or "he asked about." Example: He inquired about the status of the project during the meeting.
"How did you know that?" he asked upon finishing.
"What the fuck is this?" he asked upon being handed an oval AFL ball for the first time.
"When is a right time or easy time to leave a program?" he asked upon arrival in Ann Arbor.
