In some organisms, most of genes do indeed have essentiality values close to either 0 or 1, while in others a majority of genes have intermediate values of essentiality.
To test whether having essential orthologues in S. cerevisiae predicted essentiality in the corresponding C. elegans genes, we identified orthology groups containing non-paralogous C. elegans and S. cerevisiae genes that had been subjected to essentiality analysis.

Analysis of complex forming versus noncomplex proteins demonstrates that proteins in complexes have higher essentiality than the noncomplex proteins (average essentiality of complex proteins: 0.1665 (±0.0045) (N = 867), noncomplex proteins: 0.1002 (±0.0014) (N = 3,348); Mann–Whitney U test, P = 1.1 × 10−).
Eighty-three percent of the one-to-one orthologs between Sch. pombe and S. cerevisiae have conserved essentiality, that is, they are nonessential in both species or essential in both species.
First, reactions involved in clusters 1 to 44 had average essentiality of 0.744 and 0.748 for the wild-type and lpdA knockout mutant, respectively, while average essentiality of whole reactions was 0.215 and 0.216 under respective condition.
This suggests that functions involved in amino acid transport and metabolism, translation, ribosomal structure and biogenesis, and energy production and conversion have more essentiality in prokaryotic organisms.
Finally, essentiality of reactions calculated with constraints-based flux analysis provided additional complementary information on the clusters; essentiality has a scale of 0 to 1, and reactions with greater essentiality receives the value closer to 1 (Methods).
Although two new classes of antibiotics highly specific for mycobacteria seem to target this enzyme [7], [11], and indirect evidence of essentiality had been reported in C. glutamicum and M. tuberculosis [9], [14], direct experimental evidence of essentiality has never been presented before.
The element (s_{j'ku}phantom {dot {i}!}) with smaller u has the smaller essentiality metric on j ′the cooperator candidate, so in this sense, it is quite natural to examine the removability from (s_{j'k1}phantom {dot {i}!}).
The necessity grounded in essentiality has to be distinguished from other kinds of necessities, like "empirical" necessity or causality (cf. Reinach 1911b, 85f, where he uses the term "modal" for the necessity grounded in essences and, somehow misleadingly, "material" for "empirical" necessity).
