Harn said the two gunmen were stopped some distance from the entrance to the Curtis Culwell Center, where attendees were about to leave the event that had offered a $10,000 prize for the "best" cartoon of the Prophet Mohamed.
Harn said police don't know who fired the lethal shots.
Asked if the incident was terror-related, Mr Harn said: "We are looking at that... Obviously, they were there to shoot people.
"He was shooting with a pistol," Mr Harn said.
"Historically, when the economy is good, companies take more risks and focus more on the bottom line," Ms. Harned said.
The Harn museum has announced that Dr. Cofrin bequeathed 312 works of Asian art estimated to be worth $4.2 million and established a million-dollar endowment for the acquisition of Asian art.
Since 1983, the Cofrins have donated more than $30 million to the Harn, according to the museum.
"As an academic museum, we don't necessarily have access to the same types of donors other museums do, or even to the alumni, who are a natural constituency for the university but not for us," said Rebecca M. Nagy, the Harn's director.
But offensive behavior that creates a hostile work environment, although often not thought of as unethical behavior, is the leading reason people leave their jobs, said Patricia J. Harned, president of the center.
