At 22 18 AT (01 18 UTC), ATC Moncton handed over traffic control of the plane to Halifax Terminal Control Unit, a specialized ATC unit managing traffic in and out of Halifax, since the plane was now going to land there rather than continue on out of North American air space.
Once an airplane is within five miles of the airport, and below 2,500 feet, pilots are handed over to traffic controllers in the airport tower who provide information on wind speed and traffic, as well as clearance to land.
According to local media reports, the attacker was initially apprehended by a passer-by and then handed over to a traffic policeman in the storeroom of a nearby shoe store.
