There are two systems that direct our learned behavior: the goal-directed conscious system and the procedural habit system.

According to dual-system theories (4, 5), actions can be supported by either a goal-directed or a habit system.
To investigate this possibility more directly, we developed a novel slips-of-action test in which the goal-directed system must compete with the habit system for control.
We predicted that overreliance on the habit system would cause patients with OCD to commit more slips of action than the comparison subjects.
The putamen is typically thought to be part of the habit system (Ashby et al., 2010; Dolan & Dayan, 2013; Seger & Spiering, 2011; Yin & Knowlton, 2006).
This study, however, does not rule out the possibility that OCD patients also have an overactive habit system; rather, it suggests that deficient processing of future goals likely contributes to their tendency toward compulsive habit behavior.
The devolution of control to a dorsal striatal habit system is a normal consequence of the frequent repetition of seeking and taking behaviour and is seen – indeed was first demonstrated – in animals responding for food reward (Adams & Dickinson, 1981).
