Dr. Metzl's institute started a gym program for children last year, offering weight training in the hope of avoiding injuries.
Kenneth A. Lanier, the school superintendent, said the Shelter Island School did all it could to offer supervised recreation, including allowing the town's recreation department to run an "open gym" program on Friday and Saturday nights.
His recovery was particularly tortuous, requiring daily runs around the cricket field and an intensive gym program under the supervision of Dr. Arthur Jackson, an advocate of slow running therapy to build stamina.
Intervention data collected will include the length and type of intervention received (for example, back school program, gym program, diabetes education, or the professional seen).
It will comprise of standardised assessments/re-assessments, education and advice, manual therapy techniques, prescription and progression of a home, aquatic and gym program, and graduated return to sport and physical activity.
A patient that demonstrates > 90% quadriceps strength index (involved limb strength/uninvolved limb strength × 100) will not be required to complete quadriceps strengthening exercises during training, but they may continue their prior gym program.
They will also rate their adherence to the home program overall, as well as to its separate components (gym program, pool sessions and home exercises), at 14 weeks post-surgery on 11-point numeric rating scales (with 0 being 'not at all' to 10 being 'completely as instructed').
