Kwangju, also spelled Gwangju, city and provincial capital, South Chŏlla (South Jeolla) do (province), southwestern South Korea.
Roh was a member of the Chun-led junta that ordered the brutal suppression of demonstrators in Kwangju (Gwangju) in May 1980.

Three years earlier the regime had violently crushed a democratic uprising in Gwangju, a city in the south-west, in which thousands of students and citizens were arrested, died or went missing.The Gwangju Biennale was established in their memory in 1995.
In a one-off performance on September 3rd the children of these victims carried the remains from an ambulance to the containers, blindfolded and guided by the parents of those who had died in the Gwangju uprising.

General Chun, who seized power in the whirl of uncertainty created by the assassination of President Park Chung-hee in 1979, was eventually prosecuted over Gwangju and other misdeeds undertaken during his rule, following the restoration of democracy.
