The cognitive model of PTSD proposes that appraisals of self and of the world following severe trauma, such as self-blame, guilt, difficulties in trusting others, and views about dangerousness of the world, are important in explaining lack of recovery from trauma [ 18, 43, 44].
The individual must also experience at least four additional symptoms drawn from a list that includes changes in appetite, weight, sleep, or psychomotor activity; decreased energy; feelings of worthlessness or guilt; difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions; and recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, plans, or attempts.
Carers possibly also experience guilt and difficulties relinquishing their role as primary supporter [ 16, 17].
