Mortgage lenders offset the risk that borrowers would repay their loans early by buying up Treasury bonds that guarantee interest rates over 10 years.

One obstacle to further cuts in interest rates, which remain high in real terms, is the existence of a popular savings account (called caderneta de poupança), which offers an 8-9% guaranteed interest rate.
Several factors that affect the level of income in annuity policies such as this one: fund performance, a guaranteed interest rate if applicable; the regular bonuses declared; and the anticipated bonus rate [ABR].
"On a minimum balance of £10,000, BLME is paying 2.05% on a 12-month term account – although this is a sharia account, so the return is an expected profit rate rather than a guaranteed interest rate," says Bowes. "For a lower minimum balance of £1,000, OakNorth is paying a guaranteed 2.02% on its 12-month fixed-term deposit account.
The first option is a savings account with a guaranteed interest rate of 5%.
Because of the guaranteed interest rate, FIAs have less market risk than variable annuities.
FIAs offer a minimum guaranteed interest rate combined with an interest rate linked to a market index.
The new offering enables customers to get a guaranteed interest rate if they deposit their money with Tandem over one, two or three years, and follows the launch of the Tandem credit card in February.
It grows through the policy's guaranteed interest rate and any dividends paid by the company.
