The use of a detailed system to code the reason for admission to the critical care unit enables identification of groups of patients with specific conditions.
These populations include: the uninsured/underinsured [ 4, 7, 39]; some low-income and rural populations [ 40- 42]; some ethnic/racial minority and new immigrant groups and persons living with specific conditions such as HIV/AIDS [ 43, 44], mental illness [ 45, 46] and cancer [ 47- 49].
These surveys call for descriptions of mainly non-technical aspects of the health-care services and may involve different target populations, such as the general population, broad groups of service users, or patients with specific conditions [ 1].
