American officials became worried about the European response as early as February, a senior administration official in Washington said on Monday, when European leaders repeatedly stated that the Greece problem was well contained.
But, in fact, there are limits to how much European officials can actually do, because of the same structural limitations to the euro currency union that have let the Greece problem fester so long in the first place.
Most likely they will unveil a package of measures that lacks the clean lines and firepower of the "big bazooka" demanded by many economists, but will be just enough to kill the Greece problem and defend Italy, Spain, Portugal and Ireland.
At least the Treasury Department in Great Britain is suggesting that British banks bear their share of the burden for fixing the Greece problem (and that's under a center/conservative government).
