The analysis of influence of polarity on legibility showed that, generally, dark backgrounds lead to better results for colors with greatest luminance contrast.
We also measured additional visual parameters, including the time during the dive at which the male takes up the largest portion of the female's visual field, as well as the time at which the gorget has greatest luminance (most stimulates the double cones40) and most stimulates the LWS cone.
This change also increases contrast, allowing greater luminance differences between brighter objects (and people) and darker backgrounds (Cutting, 2014b).
During the subsequent test, without the filter, these same stimuli generate a much greater luminance, reducing or even inverting the characteristic dip in responses seen normally.
Greater luminance is associated with a higher degree of subjectively perceived brightness.
When the red and green bars are perceived as being equally bright, neither will appear to have a greater net luminance to pair with the lighter bars, and there will be no apparent motion [31].
These greater punctual luminances present in the devices with directly visible leds (Gled, Mled, type II devices) compared to the "homogeneous" Type I lights seem to be responsible for the discomfort feeling obtained from the subjective experience.
Control polyps also exhibited greater mean relative luminance of mitochondrion-rich cells (Fig. 8), and this difference was highly significant (N=16; t=4.87; P=0.0002).
The major acceptable criteria for primary/ secondary displays are maximum luminance of greater than 170/100 cd/m2, LR of greater than 250/100, and contrast conformance to that of the grayscale standard display function (GSDF) of better than 10%/20%, respectively.
The results for this and the other experiments are shown in Figure 2. Depending on the observer, the disk was detected when it had a luminance 4 9% greater than the luminance of the background.
