The inhibitory effect of grapefruit juice on the intestinal cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) system was discovered accidentally in 1989 during a study designed to test the effect of ethanol on a calcium-channel blocker (Bailey et al, 1989, 1991).
This finding of a reduced effect of grapefruit in women with a higher BMI is similar to the lower effect of ET on breast cancer risk in women with a higher BMI (Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer, 1997; Schairer et al, 2000; Million Women Study Collaborators, 2003; Beral et al, 2005).
