Re "Schools Expect Law to Require Private Tutors at City Sites" and "Mayor's Promotion Standards Are Approved for Fifth Grade" (news articles, Sept. 28): To whom will the Department of Education entrust the critical responsibilities of tutoring our "failing" New York City public school students?
In the early years, Mr. Bloomberg, flanked by top education officials, made a point of trumpeting letter grades at news conferences, warning of harsh consequences for failing schools.
"Student Expectations Seen as Causing Grade Disputes" (news article, Feb. 18) indicates a rather recent phenomenon among college students.
By eighth grade, the news anchors Bill Beutel and Kaity Tong were her local role models and Barbara Walters her network icon.
In "Teachers Collegess Upset by Plan to Grade Them" (news article, Feb. 9), Brian Kelly, editor of U.S. News & World Report, dismisses widespread academic criticism of the magazine's new teacher preparation rankings as resistance from "an industry that doesn't want to be examined".
It's a prank of fate that the grade-school news gatherer's mother would be the one to toss out yearbooks, class pins and rings, stories, artwork -- not to mention the hoard of Pied Peeper columns from The Yardbird, the mimeographed newspaper of the City and Country School in Greenwich Village.
Re "Reading Scores Drop Sharply in 8th Grade Testing" (news article, July 11): Testing is not an exact science, which is why we agreed with our test contractor not to use one of the recent results in the same manner as others.
And he suggested that attention to his own college grades by the news media made it fair to question Mr. Obama's birthplace.
"If I had to give out grades to the news media, they would go all the way from D to F," he says.
