Many data-driven companies have instituted data governance programs to avoid or lessen serious data quality issues.
But Lucian Bebchuk, director of the corporate governance program at Harvard Law School, says the recent troubles in the financial sector highlight the need to follow a basic principle when arranging executive compensation plans: "If it isn't earned, it should be returned".
"It puts the board in a terrible position," said Charles Elson, the director of a corporate governance program at the University of Delaware.
"Compare the massive destruction of wealth for shareholders to what he gets at the end of the day," said Lucian Bebchuk, the director of the corporate governance program at Harvard Law School.
Someone who sees others being rewarded so handsomely may feel as if they are just similarly blessed, said Charles M. Elson, chairman of the corporate governance program at the University of Delaware.
"It's a funny thing to call it a pension; basically it's a check of nearly $100 million," said Lucian Bebchuk, director of the corporate governance program at Harvard Law School and the co-author of "Pay Without Performance: The Unfulfilled Promise of Executive Compensation" (Harvard University Press, November 2004).

He also seemed to offer a glancing defense of his son's role in the tabloid scandals by saying that he had made "lasting contributions" in his "efforts to improve and enhance governance programs" at News International and the TV operations.
