The intervention used nine specific BCTs: Intention formation, barrier identification, specific goal setting, instruction, general encouragement, self-monitoring of behaviour social support, review of behavioural goals and relapse prevention.
Participants will be given pedometers and instructions focused on goal-setting and problem-solving, as well as calendars for self-monitoring and recording steps/day.
The BCTs were chosen to take the participant through the 10-week intervention: intention formation, barrier identification, goal setting, general encouragement, instruction, self- monitoring, social support, review of goals and relapse prevention.
Self-monitoring (e.g., limit number of drills, limit number of times providing instruction, or, limit the time spent delivering instructions) and goal setting (e.g., setting proximal and distal goals for the basketball program) were also discussed as potential strategies that coaches could implement to decrease inactivity during their training sessions.
Defined behaviour change techniques (BCT's) such as barrier identification, general encouragement, setting of graded tasks, instruction, specific goal setting, self-monitoring and feedback will be incorporated into the intervention program to enhance engagement and uptake of the intervention [ 18].
Training components included instructions for goal setting, formulating and implementing a plan to change behavior, self-evaluation, self-reward and training in problem-solving behaviors appropriate for high-risk or tempting situations.
The coaching contacts will consist of the following elements: 1) feedback, 2) goal setting, 3) feedback on formulated goals, 4) instructions for self-monitoring, and 5) training instruction.
Two other BCTs were coded from over half of interventions: "provide instruction" and "prompt specific goal setting".
