GNU Image manipulation program.
The first author (SN) used GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) to apply five different, commonly used manipulation techniques: (a) airbrushing, (b) addition or subtraction, (c) geometrical inconsistency, (d) shadow inconsistency, and (e) super-additive (manipulations a to d included within a single image).
For the calculation of the mean leaf area (individual leaf) of each tree, 10 fully developed leaves were collected from each tree during the growing season and their areas were evaluated by using a digital image processing technique (GNU Image Manipulation Program 2.6, Berkeley, California, and UTHSCSA ImageTool, San Antonio, Texas).
Images were acquired and minimally processed by importing them into the GNU image manipulation program GIMP.
When data were available only in figures, we used the GNU image manipulation program (GIMP 2.8; www.gimp.org/) to extract data.
