Supt Paul Walker, of GMP's Bury division, said: "We have launched an investigation and whilst the CCTV has been destroyed by the offenders – clearly in an attempt to cover their tracks – I can assure you that we have a team of dedicated officers working to piece together exactly what happened in an attempt to find those responsible.
Ch Supt Mary Doyle from GMP's Salford division said: "The general public may hear the words 'rival criminals' and think this has nothing to do with them as it is simply offenders targeting each other, but the reckless way in which these people operate means there is a genuine risk that innocent people could get hurt".
Ch Supt Nick Adderley, from GMP's Tameside division, said: "We have been overwhelmed by the support and compassion shown by not only our community but also from those further afield.
However, UNICEF does not issue GMP licences nor GMP certificates following these GMP inspections.
After clashing with his superiors at the Bolton division in GMP, where he had arrived in September 2011, Buttress found himself under investigation.
Assistant Chief Constable of GMP, Steve Heywood, said the division had been made to "clear up any confusion" around investigations into the claims.
