Failure is something that all scientists experience — but it's hard to tell, looking at our shiny conferences, polished presentations and glossy journals.
Staffers at the glossy socialist journal have unanimously moved to unionize and join the NewsGuild of New York.
On a balmy Thursday last month, it held an issue release party for The Journal, a glossy art quarterly based in Williamsburg.
"The people in the trade were people you'd like to sit in the back yard and enjoy life with," Bill Bentley, the editor of the glossy quarterly Ice World Journal, said.
It was life, lived year to year, decade to decade," with a deceptive sense of permanence "that gave more comfort and was less anxious to bear than a story of discontinuity and change would have been". After all, few of us have the luxury of working out our political and ideological angst in the pages of glossy magazines and learned journals.
"They came from an also-ran to being a very glossy, fun to read, hip journal," said Larry Turman, a producer of films like "The Graduate" and "American History X" who is the chairman of the Peter Stark Producing Program at the University of Southern California.
Which is to say, he eschews airbrushed glamour for a kind of carefree, sun-soaked innocence; not surprisingly, his new book, aptly titled "Not in Fashion," is more akin to a journal than a glossy Rizzoli monograph.
Over the past several years, he has been featured in Money Magazine, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Advisor Magazine, London Glossy, New Jersey Business Journal, and Affluent Magazine, among others.
