AEM models are shown to reasonably predict glazing fragmentation behaviour, breakage time and peak panel deflection at the moment of breakage.
The Gaussian glass breakage model emphasises this, and equivalently high local temperatures are not predicted when the typically adopted method of solid-object removal is used, or when the assumption of an 'open' compartment condition, where all the glazing is removed, is modelled.
This is used in conjunction with a mechanics based statistical model to predict the cumulative probability of inner glass ply breakage in laminated glazing.
Time and temperature difference at the 1 breakage are the most important parameters to character the glazing behaviors.
Results show that under various loading levels, the stresses and deflections in the VGU of this novel glazing system always remain at a marginal level, and hence the likelihood of breakage for VGUs can be reduced significantly.
Quantification of peak centre panel deflection and breakage time is then presented where variable results indicate the influence of edge supports and aspect ratio to be dependent on proximity to the threshold area as a function of glazing thickness.
