In a classic ghost narrative, it is often the children and the dogs who are first to feel the cold draught, the creep and slither of the uncanny.
An unusual number of their ghosts are women who left this world too soon, unsatisfied and uncelebrated, and, as you watch "Ugetsu" or "Kwaidan" (or read Hearn's evocative tales), you might begin to suspect that the function of the ghost narrative in Japanese culture is precisely to honor the suffering of generations of the country's women.
