Alan Hastings, a professor of environmental science and policy at the University of California, Davis, who was not involved in the research, said the paper "represents a real advance in getting that connection" between a mathematical model and an observed ecological system.
"I feel that what we've got is a lost generation of fans who haven't bought into regional rugby, who have other things to do and who haven't got that connection with their regions.
"So if you work by yourself from home it is important to socialise; it is important to get that human connection and that support".
"Once people get that always-on connection," she said, "they do more of everything online".
