The article describes the recent remarkable progress in understanding silk genetics, structures and biophysics, as well as the recombinant production of silk proteins.
First, whereas the early studies tended to focus on evolution in single populations, there is now a significant emphasis in ecological genetics on the population genetic structure of metapopulations and the roles of migration, extinction, and colonization on evolutionary and adaptive processes.
The second is that in many cases the approach taken is that of population genetics: identifying variation of interest within or between species, and then using whole organism genetics to identify the proportion of the variation that is genetic, and then using quantitative trait or association genetics to identify the genetic structure of the trait, and the dynamics of trait evolution.
Difficulties have been reported regarding various aspects of genetics, cell structure and function, compartmentalization; macromolecular structure; cell metabolism (e.g., photosynthesis, respiration, coupled reactions, and inhibition of biochemical pathways); and signaling, as well as issues related to size and scale, biophysical concepts, and dynamic aspects such as diffusion and equilibrium.
Being rooted in genetics, social structure is hard to change, and a species has to operate with whatever social structure it inherits.
