Human immunity depends on diversity: the thousands of pathogens that have invaded our bodies in the past have forced us to evolve a vast repertoire of immune-response genes, including some genes with dozens of variants.
But researchers have discovered that it's active in many tissues and cells besides bone and controls an enormous number of genes, including some associated with cancers, autoimmune disease, and infection.
