The results presented here echo the relative stability of subfamilial and generic taxa compared to the tribes [ 16, 17] suggesting the real challenge in taxonomy is to build new, robust phylogenies, and ensure that these are reflected in the classification.

Sub-generic taxa have another use in that they allow one to freely move species from one higher taxon to another without having to formally publish new combinations and leaving an untidy nomenclatural trail.
Ideally, sub-generic taxa will have a biological reality, e.g. be monophyletic, to make them meaningful, as opposed to being groupings of phenetically similar but possibly not closely related species.
They also revealed a general pattern of low congruence between morphology-based classifications and molecular phylogenies: few infra-generic taxa were confirmed to be monophyletic, and strongly supported clades did not in general correspond to recognized infra-generic taxa.
For the current number of valid species recognized in generic level taxa of the family, consult http://mosquito-taxonomic-inventory.info/ Generic-level classification of Aedini predates Reinert et al. [ 10], except for Borichinda.
When considering unmixed models on trivalent trees on n taxa, generic identifiability of the tree topology is equivalent to the projective varieties P V T M and P V T ′ M being different when T ≠ T′(see [ 31]).
The generic name of these taxa also is in dispute; until recently they were included in the circumscription of the genus Cupressus, but phylogenetic studies have shown that the genus is polyphyletic, prompting the reclassification of New World taxa (together with Xanthocyparis and one species of Chamaecyparis) under the name Callitropsis [13].
Even though the generic assignments of keratose taxa is problematic for many taxonomists and can only be achieved with histological sections and long experience, we have demonstrated that the standard CO1 barcoding fragment is suitable at this level, although more genera will need to undergo additional testing.
As has already been indicated above, the generic allocation of some taxa has varied over time.
The first rate decrease corresponds well to the end of tribe diversification estimated in BEAST, and perhaps the second shift, which is much more subtle signals the end of a burst of generic diversification, but more taxa will need to be included to test this hypothesis.
They were unable to discover morphological characters useful for a generic distinction, simply because the taxa are largely congruent (e.g., number of more or less loosely coiled chloroplasts, reproduction by conjugation and anisogamy of gametangial cells).
