We devised a simple genetic scheme, which exploits trans-generational heritability of Cas9 activity in heterozygous loss-of-function mutant backgrounds, to rapidly evaluate the phenotypic impact of numerous promoter variants for genes regulating three major productivity traits in tomato: fruit size, inflorescence branching, and plant architecture.
Whereas developmental biologists emphasise the trans-generational heritability aspect of epigenetics (that is, the necessity to stably transmit epigenetic modifications to achieve a phenotype), many scientists nowadays use the term epigenetic in a less constrained manner.
The requirement of a multi-generational pedigree has led to heritability estimates of traits likely to be associated with climate change having only been obtained from a select number of mammalian populations (Table 2).
For each heritability we generated five models.
A genome scan was performed on a multi-generational kindred of Dalmatians, previously analyzed for heritability and segregation of deafness [ 7].
It was significantly associated with body mass index (BMI) and phenotypically stronger in children, and showed a heritability of ∼50%, after adjustment for age, gender and generational effects.
