To determine the phylogenetic relationships among analysed genera, tree reconstructions were conducted with different algorithms, which all led to the same tree topology (Fig. 3).
Connaraceae, family of dicotyledonous flowering plants within the order Oxalidales, and containing 25 genera of trees, shrubs, and shrubby, twining climbers distributed in tropical regions of the world.
Pittosporaceae, family of nine genera of trees, shrubs, or vinelike plants, in the order Apiales, distributed from tropical Africa to the Pacific islands.
Ulmaceae, the elm family of the nettle order (Urticales), with 15 genera of trees and shrubs, distributed primarily throughout temperate regions.
The Theaceae comprises about 40 genera of trees or shrubs native to temperate and tropical regions of both hemispheres, including several ornamental plants, one that is the source of tea.
Sentinel egg masses were placed on leaves of Acer, Cercis, Hydrangea, and Prunus in the plots and in seven genera of trees and shrubs in adjacent woods.
In addition to the insights into squirrel life in Africa and South America, the study indicates that in Southeast Asia, a rising sea level broke widespread ancestral genera of tree squirrels into isolated populations, which quickly evolved into separate entities.
