Such a strong version of gender-selectivity would have some difficulty accounting for simple gender aftereffects, in which adapting to e.g. a male face causes a gender-neutral face to appear female [12], and would predict both lack of cross-gender transfer of adaptation, as well as minimal if any influence of the properties of different-gender faces in gender-contingent aftereffects.
