Samsung's Gear 2 and Gear Fit devices are good examples, capable of measuring their wearer's steps and heart rate, and transmitting that data to a smartphone to provide feedback.
Besides monitoring health and fitness, the Gear Fit connects with users' smartphones and relays notifications it receives, ranging from emails and text messages to "Likes" and comments on Facebook, Instagram and other social networks.

In addition to two smartwatches announced on Sunday - the Gear and Gear 2 Neo - Samsung also added the Gear Fit, a smartband that is focused on fitness.
Samsung also announced a fitness-focused version of the Gear 2 smartwatch, the Gear Fit, which has a curved AMOLED screen and measures activity and heart rate, as well as displaying notifications from a Samsung smartphone.
The Gear S has a 2in curved OLED screen that's form-fitted to the wrist, following on from its original curved Gear Fit smartwatch.
The Gear Fit, however, is definitely worth looking at if you are after a fitness tracker and would like smartwatch functionality wrapped in – as long as you have a supported Samsung smartphone, because neither the Gear 2 or Gear Fit is compatible with any other manufacturers' smartphones.
Other wearables of interest during Q2 included Xiaomi's low-cost Mi Ban, Garmin's fitness trackers for runners, cyclists and swimmers, and Samsung's Gear S and Gear Fit devices.
