The chip gear maker ASML agreed to buy Cymer, a supplier of light-based technology for making smaller and smarter chips, for $2.5 billion.
Makers of chip gear may be the most vulnerable.
However, they have also said that Canesta should be able to build less expensive and more sophisticated products over time because it designs a very specialized type of chip geared toward the 3-D recognition jobs.
Semiconductor demand is being driven by traditional technologies like PCs, printers, networking gear and, increasingly, chips for "smart" cell phones, pagers and handhelds that surf the Web.
The company settled for $54 million, and Robert, who owned 29% of L.A. Gear's stock, chipped in about 10% of the amount.
The proposed methods are applied on two case studies of face-hobbing of bevel gears, and the chip geometry is derived and the cutting forces are predicted.
Under the agreement, Ericsson, the market leader in telecommunications network gear, and STMicroelectronics, a chip maker, will take back most of the employees they contributed to ST-Ericsson, a Geneva-based venture created in February 2009 that had produced chips and modems for smartphones.
"There was a concern in Washington that this had to be a U.S.-only technology, and we've been working hard to explain to them that this has to be an international technology," said Charles W. Gwyn, program director of the American-European consortium working on the next generation of chip making gear.
Like the semiconductor industry, providers of chip-making equipment have been consolidating in recent years as weakness in semiconductor prices has held back demand for chip-making gear.
The systems could advance quickly enough to begin to play a role within the next two generations of chip-making gear, I.B.M. said.
