Surgery, such as gastric banding, stomach-stapling or stomach bypass - all of which restrict the size of the stomach - should also only be offered "in exceptional circumstances".
Like the older restriction technique, the newer one, called the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, uses staples to close off most of the stomach, leaving just a small pouch that can hold only about two tablespoons of food.
