Class was ending, and Short-Colomb glanced at tomorrow's reading assignment, "The Death of Reading". She gathered her things and walked outside, seeing what the sale of her family had ultimately helped accomplish: the gothic buildings, the coiffed gardens, students walking in every direction.
With the hugelkultur garden, students and their teachers are learning to manage resources in California. .
Whether they investigate how to cut food waste in an elementary school cafeteria, motivate youth to exercise regularly, or help to design a community garden, students learn to see the world from others' perspectives and test theory against practice.
The book also has a "how-it-works" section on community gardens, student farms, farm work therapy, and more than 80 full color photographs of diverse local food in different communities.
Besides acquiring basic gardening skills, students discovered their connections to the place-based flora and fauna, studied science with special focus on the NGSS curriculum for the day, learned to compost, created art, and shared cultural stories about food and gardening.
By providing hands on experience with gardening, the students -- 77% of whom live in poverty -- are being led by example toward a more sustainable and economically practical future.
