From 1985 to 1994 he was involved with the founding and operation of the I.B.M. Gallery of Science and Art in New York, first as a consultant and then as program director.
Set up in 1934, the gallery's science department is one of the oldest in the world and its staff have acquired a high reputation for their investigations of Europe's great paintings and painters.
The gallery claims science and art historical investigation back up the picture's authenticity, but they only prove that it comes from the right place and time: 16th-century Italy.
"I'm convinced there is really an opportunity for an independent or alternative park experience that's a cross between an art gallery, a science museum and entertainment as we know it, but it hasn't been done yet," Mr. Gabriel said.
It now houses a planetarium (designed by Dave Pentecost), a large community room, a garden roof, an airstream converted into a recording studio, an art gallery, a science laboratory, an industrial kitchen, and a cafe.
The group has an ambitious alternative plan: buy the site and turn it into art galleries, a science center and affordable housing.
The show appeared all last year in international galleries such as the Dublin Science Gallery and universities such as Colorado College, and has also visited less formal locales like West Café in Brooklyn last December.
