Assuming either a €45,000/QALY gained threshold [33] or an alternative €30,000/life year gained threshold [34], LC compared to CB would be a cost-effective strategy as second line treatment in 100% of simulations.
However considering these cost-effectiveness ratios for ARMD therapies and considering the high unmet medical need in blind RP patients (there is currently no effective therapy) it is highly likely that a cost-per QALY gained threshold of up to €80,000 will be considered as acceptable, as it is the case for ranibizumab in ARMD.
Approximately 80%% of the probabilistic simulations resulted in cost savings for nVNS + SoC (versus SoC alone), and the vast majority of the simulations plotted fell below the commonly used €20,000/QALY gained threshold (i.e. the amount that commissioners of health care services are willing to pay per additional unit of health with new technologies) (Fig. 3) [22 24].
Screening was cost effective at the £20 000 per QALY gained threshold in 45% of scenarios.
The cost per QALY gained for ZOL versus placebo was below €30,0000 per QALY gained threshold in approximately 93 94% of multivariate sensitivity analyses simulations.
Looking exemplarily at a cost per life-year gained threshold of €50,000, the probability that erlotinib is cost-effective is 93.6% in the UK, 91.0% in Germany, 91.7% in France, 92.1% in Spain, and 92.9% in Italy.

In this paper further ARMD cost per QALY gained thresholds are provided whereas photodynamic therapy compared to BSC ranged from €25,193 [19] to €46,535 [20] and pegaptanib versus BSC resulted in €54,252 [21] per QALY gained.
This modulation scheme provides a maximum modulation efficiency of η=81% and leads to gain threshold of about −124 dB.
These system parameters lead to gain thresholds of FTh=−47 dB and BTh=−118 dB (see Equations (2) and (5)).
Outage probabilities for two specific system implementations which lead to gain thresholds of BTh=−118 dB and BTh=−124 dB (upper bar chart: −118 dB, lower bar chart: −124 dB): The outage probabilities of the backward link are plotted for all four on-body links and for all four antenna configurations (900 MHz and 2.45 GHz monopoles, 900 MHz and 2.45 GHz patches).
Outage probabilities for two specific system implementations which lead to gain thresholds of FTh=−47 dB and FTh=−70 dB (upper bar chart: −47 dB, lower bar chart: −70 dB): The outage probabilities of the forward link are plotted for all four on-body links and for all four antenna configurations (900 MHz and 2.45 GHz monopoles, 900 MHz and 2.45 GHz patches).
