Fifty years ago, guessing what the future would look like was particularly in vogue, and all those fantastic retro-futuristic drawings were born.
That's according to Paris-based architect Vincent Callebaut, who released a series of futuristic and delightful drawings last week showing what sustainable, floating cities of "oceanscrapers" off the coast of Rio de Janeiro could possibly look like.
His images are more about the imagination, like Leonardo da Vinci's drawings of futuristic inventions — which, he said, grounds them perfectly in the World's Fair site.
The group didn't produce any buildings, but their rejection of Modernism and their radical ideas about architecture and its relationship to human life -- projected through drawings, diagrams, futuristic collages, films and writing -- were internationally influential.

Organized by Kristen Hileman, an associate curator at the Hirshhorn, the exhibition of 49 sculptures and 35 paintings and drawings has a beautiful, futuristic look.
