In undertaking this analysis we draw on examples of CED projects from various countries, not in an attempt to criticize the process or any particular group, but to ground and further illustrate the themes that have emerged from our interviews.
At the end of this process, three further documents concerning specific themes that had been mentioned but not developed in the first 11 documents were added for analysis.
The societal challenges pillar secured 38.53% of the budget the largest chunk of the three and is further broken down into key themes that include health, forestry, marine research, efficient energy, green transport, climate, and environment.
These were grouped into 11 basic themes that were further clustered into 4 organising themes, and 2 global themes (Table 2).

However, qualitative research methods aim to generate further understanding and explore the themes that are important to the people being studied and their value in prescribing research is documented.
There were, however, certain common themes that require further discussion; because of the interconnected nature of these issues, affecting change will require a deeper understanding of both the causes of the problems and the effects of the proposed solutions.
Codes were then derived, existing codes were revised if new codes emerged (further coding and recoding), and further analysis was conducted to develop themes that could authentically and accurately represent the topic being studied [ 16].
