The spatial tuning of activity in the task-related cells was analyzed statistically by comparing the mean firing rate in each target position (one-way ANOVA, F-test; significance level, p<0.05) for each of the functional epochs described above.
We divided the trial into functional epochs, defined as follows (see bottom part of Figure 1a): FIX: steady fixation of the LED from its appearance to the cue onset; it contains the baseline activity of the neuron, used to compare the cell activity during the other epochs.
For neurons showing a significant modulation, we statistically compared mean firing rates recorded for different gaze directions during each of the considered functional epochs listed above (one-way anova, F-test; significance level: P < 0.05).
