Brains were removed and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for at least 3 days at room temperature before being cut into five coronal levels to reveal caudal medulla, rostral medulla, midbrain, thalamic and frontal levels, required for lesion quantitation and profiling as detailed below.
