Research reveals that levels of phosphorus washed into the lake have increased dramatically over the last two decades with run-off from fertilizers used for industrial corn and soy production and manure pollution from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs).
The aquifers are shallow, as evidenced in part by the high nitrate levels (Orem et al. 2002; Niagolova et al. 2005), an indicator of surface contamination [that likely originate from fertilizers used by the villagers (Orem et al. 2002)].
Water quality degradation from excessive fertilizer use and runoff is a worldwide problem.
In one of the years half of the leaching reduction was achieved by the 'input' component of the strategy (less feed N flowing through the herd from lower fertilizer use, less grass grown, and low-protein supplement use), while the other half was achieved by the stand-off strategy.
