Arnett (2007), in his critique of the concept of peer influence, has argued that a more appropriate concept is that of peer context, which takes account of friendship selection in determining peer influences [ 56].
From this position and assuming that the EEA is correct, our findings could suggest that genes influence the smoking behaviours of adolescents and young adults indirectly by influencing friendship selection.
Prior studies noted that friendship selection played a relatively stronger role than peer influence when explaining similarity of early adolescent friends' alcohol use and that influence effects tended to diminish as students aged [ 27, 30].
A recent Western Australian study with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous adolescents found that smoking status had little relevance to friendship selection but that lower socio-economic and Aboriginal adolescents reported more peer pressure to try smoking [ 30].

We focused on two main empirical difficulties in estimating social network effects within reference groups: firstly, that friendship selection is non-random, which leads to correlation between the error term and friend's health, and, secondly, that confounding factors affect all members of the reference group.

Importantly, our research also revealed how non-smoking youth reduced their interactions with smoking peers and even ended friendships (de-selection) with peers who did not conform to their standards for a smoke-free environment.
