During the project, remarkable frescoes were discovered in what is now the Affresco Suite (which also contains an ancient sarcophagus converted into a bathtub), and artisans painstakingly replaced centuries-old mosaics, repaneled the library, and restored an orangery.

In 2013, officials unveiled several discoveries during a restoration project, including new frescoes as well as ancient graffiti and drawings of phallic symbols.
Among the artists Michelangelo came to know and admire was Titian, who visited Rome during the period of this project (1542 50), and the frescoes seem to betray his influence in colour.
"Anything that could happen, happened to these frescos of Piero," said Anna Maria Maetzke, who oversaw the project as superintendent of Arezzo's art treasures, bemoaning five centuries of earthquakes, lightning strikes and manmade disasters.
