The publisher of a book about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima whose author relied on a fraudulent source has said it will stop printing and shipping copies because of further questions about the writer's sources.
Last week Henry Holt & Company stopped printing and selling "The Last Train From Hiroshima," about the atomic bombing of Japan, because its author had relied on a fraudulent source for a portion of the book and possibly fabricated others.
Co-founder and CTO Paul Müller argued that although the industry has become increasingly concerned about fraud, Adjust has led the way in taking a more proactive approach: "Instead of just telling our clients, 'Hey, you just spent money on fraud,' we actively intervened and rejected attribution to a fraudulent source".
A faked passport would not be sufficient: "they would need a very full false ID, and have to not appear on any list of fraudulent identities," one source at the GDS told the Guardian.
Others showed up fraudulent claims through reference to data from sources as diverse as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, the Passport Office, credit card companies and mobile phone contracts.
Buyers, they said, "should use extra caution when purchasing alleged tickets from unofficial sources, for fraudulent or counterfeit tickets will not be accepted".
Online purchases, also known as card-not-present transactions, represent the primary source of fraudulent transactions.
