We demonstrate that, in addition to inhibiting the proliferation of L. amazonensis promastigotes, the PvD1 defensin was able to cause cytoplasmic fragmentation, formation of multiple cytoplasmic vacuoles and membrane permeabilization in these cells.
In the present study, we found both effects for PvD1, which is the first reported plant AMP capable of causing cytoplasm fragmentation, formation of multiple cytoplasmic vacuoles and plasma membrane disruption of L. amazonensis promastigotes.
