Despite the attractiveness of this model, the fraction of progenitor divisions that generate intermediate progenitors vs. postmitotic cortical neurons during development remains poorly understood, and live imaging is likely necessary to clarify the patterns of cell division that lead to the production of intermediate progenitors vs. neurons.
