The startup was founded in July 2013 by Pratik Verma, a PhD from Stanford University and a veteran data scientist who also founded database security company AgeTak in 2005.
Now a septuagenarian, he's decided it's about time to give the technology sector a go, founding SMS database capture system Client Loyalty and partnering up for another SMS-based service for real estate called Property Instaview.
According to Col Needham, who founded the database in 1990 in Britain, the site received four complaints when it decided to start selling advertisements in 1996, and no complaints when it was bought by Amazon in 1998.
Founded by database architect Jim Starkey and CEO Barry Morris, NuoDB launched in 2010.
For those too young to remember, he founded the database technology pioneer Sybase, and served as its chairman, chief executive and president.
In addition to his work in academia, Stonebraker was instrumental in founding and managing several database companies; he served as the chief technology officer for seven of those firms, including Ingres, Illustra, Informix, Cohera, Streambase, and Vertica Systems.
Database platform MongoDB is an open source NoSQL document-store database, founded by 10gen.
"He should just dump the database business," says Michael Stonebraker, who started two database firms before founding yet another software venture, Cohera.
The largest database, founded in the 1970s, is run by ChexSystems, a subsidiary of FIS, a financial services company in Jacksonville, Fla .Subscribers — Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Citibank and Wells Fargo among them — "regularly contribute information on mishandled checking and savings accounts," ChexSystems says on its Web site.
