This paper describes developments in quantitative measurement of the heterotrophic and autotrophic active biomass concentrations within the engineering and technology paradigm, and the formulation of a multinational project which will attempt to link these measurements and the defined engineering environment to the new microbiological and biochemical analytical techniques.
