The cyclisation of the nitrogen atom of the glycine linker to form a bicyclic imide was once again observed in the reaction products after coupling: for the dimethyl maleate adducts 10, all of the reaction products 16a– d contained only a bicyclic imide.
Debenzylation was achieved by hydrogenation using 10% palladium on carbon, in high yield, as illustrated in Scheme 2.
